Thursday May 17, 2012

The pairings were set, the sun was shining, the wind was only slightly blowing and we were ready to tee off at Bandon Dunes.  We first hit the range in order to make sure all was in order.

Shackie getting his groove on as he prepares to dominate the field at Bandon Dunes.

I don't know what my expectations were coming in as far as my scoring average but I did know one thing...I was in a heavenly place with some of my closest friends.

The scenery and the course lived up to the hype.  These were some of the most spectacular views I had ever seen while trying to hit a little white ball into a little black hole.  I tried not to think too much about the golf but more about where I was and how much fun I was having.  In my first foursome was: Iceman, Tbone, and Stanga.  We had first scheduled Bandon Dunes, a spectacular course with holes right along the ocean.

Cragun, Dro, Tbone, and Stanga with the ocean behind us and the hope of brilliant golf shots in our future.

Some of the fellas hired caddies, others got a pull cart...I said the heck with all that...I am carrying my bag.  This wasn't a very smart decision on my part and by the 2nd 18 holes, I got a pull cart like everyone else.  I think it was golf at its purest.

I loved walking leisurely down the fairway in anticipation of my next shot.  I loved taking in the sights and the smells of the ocean air.  I loved talking with the fellas in my foursome as we walked rather than being whisked away in a golf cart...not being able to enjoy nature at its finest.

Tbone ripping it down the middle like he did all weekend.

Stanga crushing like always.

Dro with his backswing at parallel getting ready to hurt the golf ball.

Cragun the technician.  A golf swing never looked more pure.

Cragun with the ocean as his backdrop.  Unreal.

Cragun and Dro taking time to pose with a picturesque view.

Our 2nd round was Pacific Dunes and I was able to play with: Cookster, DK, and DMac.  I didn't play well so my memories of that course are few and far between.  I did enjoy getting to know DK and DMac.  I hadn't met them before and there's nothing like 5 hours of golf that will bring people closer together.

DK, Dro, Cookster, and DMac from left to right.

I will say this...they both shared a caddie and that caddie had to be the slowest human being to ever walk Pacific Dunes.  He carried both their bags and acted like he was Bones Mackay caddying at the US Open.  Cookster and I (friends since we were 10 years old), got a good laugh every hole as we sat on the green waiting for "Bones" and his 2 prodigies to arrive.  I think I actually shot the worst in the group so maybe I needed Bones to carry my bag too.

DMac with a pure follow-through.  Somebody get this swing on video for sale.

Dro and Cookster.  Finally I found a guy that doesn't make me look like an umpa-lumpa.

DK again showing his skills.

DMac with the divot spraying up and the ocean to his left.  What a shot!

After both rounds were over, the scores were assessed and both the good and bad shots were recounted.  A popular mini-game within each foursome was being played called "Banker."  This game leads to the best stories of all time.  It involves doubling down on good drives and doubling back on even better ones.  It is the ultimate game of cat and mouse and puts one's golf game at a crossroad.  I believe we've all been a part of a great "banker" story either for or against one's wallet.  Sometimes it got tough to "enjoy the scenery" when you feel yourself choking away the benjamins in your wallet or in my case the washingtons.

In any case, I had just played 36 holes of golf on some of the best courses I had ever played.  The wind had definitely played a factor in many of our scores except for one guy: Tbone.  He somehow had manipulated the elements and was sitting atop the leaderboard with plenty of strokes to spare.

Yep, it happened....7 months later, it all came to fruition.  Oh, there was much consternation along the way, self-doubt, and pity but somehow, someway, 12 of us made it happen (pictured from left to right):

Pat Nelson = nelly
Jeff Cook = cookster
Mark Cragun = iceman
Cort Green = jesper
Jon Hansen = tbone
Johnathan Ord = j.ord
Jon Hendrickson = dro
Chris Bagley = bags
Dave McCleary = dmac
Chad Thompson = shackie
Jeff Stanga = stanga
Dave Kennedy = dk

I'm not sure exactly how but after months of hype, handicapping, flight juggling, emailing, and begging...the trip of a lifetime was here and Bandon Dunes was only a few hours away.

Some of the fellas (iceman, cookster, j.ord, and nelly) decided to get their trip started in style and actually golfed early Wednesday morning at Aviara in Carlsbad.  The rest of us were just hoping that our bodies would hold up with the much anticipated 108 holes of golf that awaited us in the next 3 days.  The one thing about Bandon Dunes that none of us were prepared for was that they do not allow golf carts and therefore, we knew going in, that we would be forced to walk 12-16 miles a day.  It was a scary proposition but one we all still were looking forward to like none other.

Tbone was gracious enough to drive me down to the San Diego airport where we would meet up with some of the fellas.

Tbone's "shuttle" to the airport.

Cookster, Bags, and Nelly looking forward to the trip of a lifetime.

Iceman, J.Ord, and Tbone living it up during the layover.

After a bit of a delay in San Francisco where we drew for teams, hung out, and of course killed the time by playing "Uno," we were finally on our way to Bandon Dunes!

Nelly, Bags, Cookster, Tbone, DMace, J.Ord, Iceman, and Stanga anticipating who their teammate might be.

We made it!

Pre-Trip Hype

I believe it was over 6 months ago when the first mention of Bandon Dunes was thrown out there.  Actually, after searching through my email, it looks like Friday October 7th, 2011 the following was sent by Chad Thompson:

"We've talked about this for years. It's time to step up boys!
May 16-19, 2012.  Who is in? Show yourselves!"

The first thought that entered in my mind was this, "Sounds like the trip of a lifetime, too bad I won't be there."  There were a few things holding me back and the price of the trip was #1.  I just couldn't see being able to justify the cost of playing multiple rounds of golf in Oregon even though the courses are rated some of the greatest public courses in America.  Not to mention that May 16 was a Wednesday which would mean I would have to "call in sick" 3 days in a row.

A few days later, on October 10th, the following email was sent:

Committed so far:

Shackie
Cook
Cragun
Cort
Bags
Hantz
Nelly
ORD
DRO- I'm penciling him in whether he likes it or not.

No Response: DRO

OUT: TOD..Fag Face!

Cort, what are the chances of getting Blove out? Is he making some scratch yet? Maybe ord can pay for blove since he wants to hire him? Hantz, how bout Mckee? Nelly, would Noodles or Watty be interested? those guys would be sweet.

Dro, you were the one who asked if we were gonna do a huge golf trip to celebrate most of your guys 40th bday. Well, it looks like we are and no word from the Dro? Dude, tell loubige that you will give her a hundred back rubs or whatever you do to butter her up and lets get this thing done! Dude, Hansen, Ord, and Bags will be there.....those guys are hacks...we can roll those old farts for tons of cash! Remember when we rolled Howard and Bags? EZ MONEY BABY! :)

Lets do Diss!

Shrackie

Obviously, this email was a key component into me thinking that maybe I should look a little more closely at this trip.  Could it actually happen?  Would I be able to save enough money?  Would Lou Ann allow me to "go for it?"  Afterall, I did want something to remember my 40th birthday and this would definitely be something to remember....
